Dear Reader:
On a beautiful spring afternoon in Vermont, 3 years ago, I watched a mandatory corporate rah-rah (read: work extra hard to help us make more money without increasing your salaries) video from our SVP of Sales and a wave of intense anxiety came crashing over me like a vicious tidal wave.
I was approaching my thirtieth birthday, and until that exact moment, I thought had “made it” working in a tech company as a Product Manager.
But suddenly, it hit me: I hadn’t been promoted in years, my salary didn’t give me an ounce of financial freedom, and I felt a pain in my gut so intense I had to walk out of the office to get fresh air to calm myself down.
While on that walk, I popped open LinkedIn and came across an announcement from someone I graduated college with 8 years earlier, very much like me, ambitious, driven, hard-working, and always curious about new opportunities.
We both started off our careers strong and even ended up working at the same company together for 2 1/2 years.
But there was a difference.
He was a Vice President at a start-up and his announcement was that they had just been acquired for 8-figures. He ended up semi-retiring for 5 months, then buying a second home in Vermont before joining another start-up as a Vice President, while I drove back to my apartment feeling stuck, wondering where I went wrong.
What Made the Difference
Do you ever scroll and wonder, what makes such a difference in people’s lives? Both of us worked hard and did “the right things” with similar intelligence and even the same starting point in our careers! It wasn’t that he wanted success and I didn’t.
The difference, I’ve learned after that leaving that soul-sucking job and building my own 7-figure start-up, lies in the identification, application, and amplification of your skills and your story.
How was he able to communicate his skills and accomplishments to land life-altering opportunities, but I couldn’t? How did he seem to intuitively know that he should apply his skills outside of his full-time job to both build his brand and increase his financial freedom but I couldn’t find a way to do the same thing?
